Progress Over Perfection: The Mindset That Actually Launches Businesses

July 23, 20264 min read

Perfectionism isn't a standard. It's a hiding strategy.

It looks responsible. It sounds disciplined. It feels like you're just being thorough. But underneath it all, perfectionism is fear wearing a professional costume. And it is costing you far more than you realise.

What Perfectionism Is Really Costing You

Here is what I see over and over in coaches who haven't launched yet.

Day one of the challenge arrives. They get their assignment. They know what to do. And then the internal negotiation starts. Maybe I'll post it in an hour. Maybe after dinner. Maybe I'll sleep on it and do it fresh in the morning. And then day two arrives with its own assignment, and they are already 24 hours behind.

That's not caution. That is fear running the show.

Perfectionism costs you three things.

It costs you time. Every day you spend tweaking, adjusting, and waiting is a day you are not in market. Not learning. Not growing.

It costs you momentum. The longer you wait, the louder the doubt gets. The first version is never going to feel ready. The question is whether you wait until it feels perfect, or you go before it does.

And the third thing it costs you is the client who needed you now. Somewhere out there is a person in the position you used to be in. Lost, uncertain, spinning their wheels. They needed you last month. They need you this week. And they cannot find you because you haven't put yourself out there yet.

That is the real cost of waiting.

Give Yourself Permission to Be Bad Before You're Good

Here is the mindset I give every single person in my Rocket Launch Challenge.

Give yourself permission to be bad before you get good.

Write it on a piece of paper and stick it on your wall. Stare at it every day. Because this is what will carry you through the moments when you want to pull back, overthink, or redo everything from scratch.

Ron walked into one of my challenges as, in his own words, a huge overthinker. He hadn't even gotten access to the library on day one. He had no idea what he was setting up. But he made one decision: every day, when the instruction came, he would implement it without overthinking. Four days later, he had three people signed up, invoices sent, and payments being collected.

He didn't wait until he understood everything. He moved before he was fully ready. That is the only way it works.

This is why I teach that marketing is testing. Your first post is not your final post. Your first offer is not your finished offer. Everything you put out is data. It teaches you what your audience responds to, what words resonate, what makes people raise their hand. You cannot get that data by planning. You only get it by doing.

Take the emotion out of the implementation. Trust the process. Those are not inspirational phrases. They are a description of exactly what it looks like to make progress.

What You Get When You Ship Before You're Ready

Carla joined one of my challenges and on day one, she was crying. She told herself she was in the wrong place. Who is going to say yes? Who is going to want what she was offering? She could not see it.

By day five, she had three people ready to sign up.

Not because everything was perfect. Because she shipped before she was ready and let the market respond.

When you progress without waiting for perfect, here is what you get. You get data. You find out what actually lands. You get feedback that shapes your next version. You get testimonials from your first clients that give the next clients confidence to say yes. And above all, you get the kind of certainty that cannot come from thinking. It only comes from doing.

Cheong said it perfectly after one of her rocket launches. She didn't get the results she was hoping for that round. But she shared it with the group anyway: just trust the process and keep doing what you do. Every action gets you closer. No matter how long it takes, if you keep persisting, you will get the result you want.

That is what progress looks like. Imperfect, iterative, unstoppable.

When your desire is greater than your fears, you become unstoppable. That line is not a motivational poster. It is the exact description of what happens when you stop waiting for perfect and start moving with purpose.

So here is the question I want to leave you with.

What is one thing you have been waiting to perfect before you ship? Not next week. Not when you feel ready. What could you put out today?

Start there.
