The Story That Sells: How Your Journey Becomes Your Best Marketing

July 04, 20264 min read

People don't buy your program. They buy you.

They buy the reason you do this work. The thing you went through that nobody else in their life has named out loud. The moment you decided to stop playing small and start showing up. That is what creates the "that's exactly me" moment in your ideal client.

And the way you communicate all of that is through your story.

The Story That Connects

I have a phrase I use in my Rocket Launch Challenge: your story that connects.

Your story that connects isn't your highlight reel. It isn't your credentials or your certification or your list of achievements. It is the moment of decision, the point where you said, "I've been through this, and I know I can help others go through it too."

I want to tell you about a message I received in May 2021.

I had been invisible on social media for more than eight years. Then, on the morning of May 9, I jumped out of bed, signed up for a challenge run by some of the biggest names in the industry, and started sharing my notes publicly so my friends in Singapore and Southeast Asia, who were watching at 2am, could keep up.

I didn't expect anything. I was just trying to be useful.

By the end of the challenge, those notes had received 16,000 over likes and 5,000 over comments. But it wasn't the numbers that stopped me. It was one message from a woman named Elizabeth McKay.

She wrote: "Thank you. I just fallen into a place of this is for others. I don't have what it takes, and you have given me a pathway back to action. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you."

That message made me cry.

Because when I read it, I was taken back to being in my twenties in China, alone, mattress on the floor of a rented room, crying myself to sleep on my birthday and wondering whether I was ever going to make it. Feeling exactly what Elizabeth felt: this is for others. I don't have what it takes.

And in that moment, I realised I had a mission.

That story, shared authentically, is what made thousands of people feel seen. Not my achievements. Not my program. My story. The honest, vulnerable, real version of it.

That is what your story can do for someone else.

The S.T.O.R.Y. Framework

A good story doesn't have to be long. It doesn't have to cover your whole life. It needs one moment. One turning point. And a revelation the reader can use.

Here is how I structure it.

S - Scene. Drop into a specific moment. Not "a few years ago" but "I was sitting on the floor of my apartment in Shanghai when my phone rang." Sensory, specific, real.

T - Tension. Name the pain without dramatising it. What was the problem, the fear, the thing that felt impossible? Keep it honest. Don't perform the suffering. Just name it.

O - One Moment. The decision. The realisation. The conversation that changed something. What was the single moment that shifted the direction?

R - Revelation. What did you learn that you didn't know before? What principle came out of that experience that is universally true? This is the teaching. This is what the reader takes away.

Y - Your Turn. Connect the story back to your reader. How does what you learned apply to where they are right now? And what is the next step they can take?

A story built this way does two things at once. It creates connection. And it creates conviction. The reader finishes it thinking both "I relate to you" and "I believe you can help me."

Connection before conversion. Every time.

The Story You're Sitting On

Here is the thing most coaches don't realise.

You have a story that someone else desperately needs to hear. A moment where you were exactly where your ideal client is right now. A time when you felt what they feel, the self-doubt, the confusion, the "maybe this isn't for me" spiral. And you found a way through.

That story, shared in your voice, is something no one else on earth can replicate. It is your biggest unfair advantage. Big brand names, polished marketing agencies, and high-budget campaigns cannot compete with one authentic human story that makes a stranger feel completely understood.

You don't need to overshare. You don't need to air everything. You need one scene, one tension, one moment, one revelation, and one question that brings it back to your reader.

And then you share it. On your personal page. In your content. In your posts.

Because somewhere out there is a person in the position you used to be in. Lost. Questioning. Wondering if this is for others. Not for them.

Your story is their pathway back to action.

What story are you sitting on that someone else needs to hear?
