You Don't Need the Perfect Niche. You Need a Clear Enough Starting Point.
Most coaches I know spent weeks trying to perfect their niche before they ever had a single conversation with a potential client.
I was one of them.
I spent time trying to get my niche statement perfect. Tweaking my bio. Second-guessing every word. Starting over.
And the whole time I was doing that, I wasn't coaching anyone.
That's the trap. And if you're in it right now, I want to help you get out.
The Myth That's Keeping You Stuck
There is a belief quietly running in the background of most new coaches' minds.
It sounds like this: "I need to have my niche completely figured out before I can start."
Or this: "What if I pick the wrong niche and waste months going in the wrong direction?"
Or this: "I just need a little more time to get clear."
I understand why this feels true. Clarity feels safe. And starting without it feels reckless.
But here's what actually happens when you chase the perfect niche.
You overthink. You delay. You compare yourself to coaches who already have it figured out. You convince yourself that your uncertainty means you aren't ready. And then another month passes without you helping a single person.
That is not caution. That is fear dressed up as preparation.
The truth is simpler. You don't need the perfect niche.
You need a clear enough starting point.
Clarity = confidence. Confidence = action. Action = results. And results are what will actually refine your niche better than any thinking session ever will.
What a Niche Actually Is
Let's strip this back to basics.
Your niche is not a category. It's not a vibe. It's not a broad topic like "mindset" or "wellness."
Your niche is: WHO you help + the PROBLEM you help them solve.
That's it.
When you combine those two things into one sentence, you have a starting point. It doesn't need to be perfect. It needs to be specific enough that someone reading it thinks: "That's me."
Here's what that looks like in practice:
"I help busy mums lose 10kg without dieting."
"I help introverts build confidence on camera, even if they are shy and inexperienced."
"I help new coaches get their first 3 clients without expensive paid ads."
Notice what all three have in common. A specific WHO. A specific RESULT. And an obstacle removed.
None of them are perfect. But every single one is clear enough to attract the right person, and send the wrong person elsewhere.
That is the goal.
A Faster Path to Clarity
If you're staring at a blank page wondering who your WHO is, here's where to start.
Ask yourself three questions.
One: Who were you 1 to 3 years ago? What were you struggling with? What would have changed your life back then?
Two: What specific transformation have you had? What have you overcome or figured out that you could walk someone else through, step by step?
Three: Who already asks you for help? Look at your messages, your comments, your friends. What do people naturally see you as the go-to for?
Your niche is not hiding in a research document. It's hiding in your own story and your own lived experience.
Most people are sitting on more niche clarity than they realise. They just haven't stopped long enough to look.
Take 15 minutes with those three questions. Write your answers down. Don't filter. Don't judge. Just write.
You'll be closer to your starting point than you've ever been.
And when you have that starting point, start. Talk to the people your niche describes. Listen to their exact words. See what resonates. Let that feedback refine your message over time.
Your niche will evolve. Every coach's does. The ones who figure it out are not the ones who thought longest. They're the ones who started soonest.
So what are you waiting for?
